John McCann is the author of the first book ever written exclusively on building survival kits, and is a good friend of ours here at the shop. Published by Krause Publication (now KP Books), April 2005.  It is a 6" x 9" soft cover book with 192 pages and over 150 photographs.  The foreword is by Ron Hood of Hoods Woods, with over 35 years of experience in teaching survival.  An emergency can arise at any time.

Now everyone from the average commuter to the risk-taking sportsman can benefit from a survival kit.  Each kit is described with a list of components, a picture of the finished product, and a discussion of each component and its value.  The book advocates careful planning and building a personalized kit specifically tailored to each outing or possible emergency.  Readers will learn about the nine component categories: Fire & Light, Signaling, Navigation, Water & Food, Shelter & Protection, Knives & Tools, Multi-purpose Items, and Miscellaneous Items.

Armed with the kit-building techniques found in this book, You Will Be Prepared to Survive!

In Survivability for the Common Man, Dave starts by covering his philosophy of the Pathfinder System.  Further covering what to carry; with tips and tricks on how not to lose your gear and what to do if you find it floating downriver without you. Topics cover everything from fire making, shelter, hunting for food, foraging, orienteering, and more.

Survivability for the Common Man provides an overview of what to do in the wilderness so that you don’t panic if you get put into an emergency situation, with general instruction on how to be found by a SAR (Search and Rescue) team.  It is all about thinking smart because the philosophy behind the Pathfinder System is all common sense. This is a no nonsense, no fluff book on building and maintaining a minimum size hiking or camping kit coupled with the high level outline of skills you will need in the outdoors.
